Aalto Ice Tank, a multipurpose basin
Experience in model scale ice testing
The ice tank was established in the early 1980s at the Helsinki University of Technology, and for over 25 years it has provided an environment for model scale testing in ice.
It is ideally suited for testing ships and other maritime structures in ice conditions. Tests in model scale ice are the core function of the facility. The model scale ice is fine grained and generated through a spraying process.
Activities in the tank have been related to resistance and propulsion tests of ships, maneuvering tests, various marine structures and their interaction with ice and the modeling of natural ice formations, such as ice ridges.
The facility and its ice have proved their functionality over the years in numerous research tests and commercial tests. The tank has been under thorough renovation and upgrade in 2015 and 2016. After the renovation, Ice Tank will be available for the use of academic professionals and industrial experts according to our access guidelines and pricing principles.
